About Cork

Overview

Located on the South coast of Ireland, Cork is Ireland's second largest city after Dublin and is sometimes referred to as the 'real' capital of Ireland by its proud residents. Cork is home to approximately 480,000 residents, including Cork City, while the county itself covers an area of just under 7,500 square kilometres.

The county has a long and distinguished history, playing a major role during key moments in Irish history, and playing host to some of the country's fiercest battle down through the centuries, including the Desmond Rebellions in the sixteenth century, the Battle of Kinsale in the early seventeenth century and also during the Irish Civil War.

The City is home to a number of major corporations, including Pfizer and Motorola who have European operations based in Cork. The county is also home to one of Ireland's leading educational institutions, the University College Cork (UCC), founded in 1845 and hosting over 15,000 students.

The city's cultural and historical scene rivals that of Dublin, with a number of excellent Museums, Galleries and the country's best known Jazz festival.
